This fund is being established by John W. Hoopes, Lauren Mattleman Hoopes, their family, colleagues, former students, and friends to support student travel abroad to conduct research in anthropology with an emphasis on archaeology. Expenses covered can include airfare, lodging, and per diem for trips lasting four weeks or more.
Fifty years ago, John’s paternal grandparents took him on a trip to visit archaeological sites in Mexico as a gift in honor of his high school graduation. That international travel encouraged his interest in the precolonial Indigenous cultures of Latin America and strengthened his resolve to pursue both undergraduate and graduate training in American archaeology.
Grants from the Josef Albers Traveling Fellowship of Yale College provided the necessary funds for John to participate in archaeological fieldwork projects in Costa Rica and Ecuador. Grants from the Department of Anthropology and the John Owens Fund of the Bowditch Bequest at Harvard University supported his additional graduate research in Costa Rica. These experiences solidified his love for Latin America, his fluency in Spanish, and his lifelong dedication to international study.
The Hoopes Family Student Research Travel Fund will help students initiate new projects or participate on existing ones. Applicants must submit a letter of intent with a description of the project, a commitment to pursue relevant language competency, a justification for financial support, a detailed list of budget items, and a current curriculum vitae.
